Preschool Activity: Penguins

Winter is a fun season for preschool activities. Everything from snowmen, to snowflakes to winter gear is fare game. In January, Aaron and I decided to learn about Penguins–not exclusive to winter, but they are all about the cold like New Yorkers in January right?.  Since we are continuing our part-time homeschooling journey, our Penguin project was a nice way to wrap up the topic.

This project wasn’t inspired by anything in particular, but the creative musings of a mother browsing Michaels craft store. If Pinterest or my favorite homeschooling blogs don’t spark some inspiration, my next favorite thing to do is to walk up and down the aisles of “craft central.” There’s no way I am walking out of that place empty handed.

So what did I pick up exactly?

Just your average jumbo clothespin and some feathers. The rest, I reused from past projects.

In this project, we covered the following learning areas (based on a variety of methods, including Montessori):

  1. Language/Literacy
    • We read a few books about penguins and picked out some keywords that stood out about the nature and life of penguins.
    • I created some questions for Aaron to trace and answer using the keywords.
    • We talked about the creation process.
  2. Art & Fine Motor Skills
    • We practiced scissor cutting skills to cut and trim the feathers and the leaves for feet.
    • Picking up tiny googly eyes to paste onto the penguin required some pincer grasp practice.
  3. Science
    • We also talked about the parts of a penguin’s body and the various types of penguins
  4. Geography
    • We talked about the various places you can find penguins.
