Why is Self-Care So Important: Are You Not Super Woman?

So is the question that the stubborn woman asks. My husband often calls me his super woman. It’s a real ego booster for me—to know that I can accomplish so much and sometimes within very little time and help people. Super woman is a cool title considering all that the comic book version does. When you think about the comic book Super Woman, what do you think about?

I think about a woman who essentially does the same thing—solving problems, protecting and saving people from danger, kicking evil butt (for lack of a better word) and so on—except for the fact that she can fly amongst other things. In the process of being super, she is often immune to those same dangers.

I wonder whether or not people consider a few caveats. Even in super power life, she gets
  1. stressed,
  2. scared and
  3. overworked and burned out

I was watching the series, Super Girl on Netflix on a random “new show binge” where Super Girl allows herself to get vulnerable on multiple occasions. In her vulnerability she expresses fear: fear of making a hard decision, fear of not fulfilling expectations, fear of leaving loved ones behind.

Do you want to know what I loved most about those moments? She allowed herself to be vulnerable even in her Super Girl form—not just in her Kara Danvers appearance. Why do I love that? That vulnerability positioned her to receive help.

The real life “super woman” gets stressed due to some of those fears I mentioned, if not all, if not more. Those moments on Super Girl are reminders that in real life, stress, fear and being burned out, can lead to depression—something I am finding to be a hidden epidemic, particularly amongst black women.

There are a lot of great super women out there. You are probably one of them. But, are you allowing yourself to be vulnerable? Are you positioning yourself for help—not just assistance with your “super woman” duties, but also with doing things that make you feel good as a woman and keep you in your “I CAN CONQUER THE WORLD” state of mind intact. You can’t officially keep your “super woman” tag if you’re not taking care of you. After all, without you, the world falls apart.

In my post about finding time for yourself, I only gave half of the journey. The other half of the journey is doing something with the time you find. What does that look like? O my gosh! The world is your oyster.

A few ideas:
  1. Hop on a cheap flight to somewhere fun
  2. Get your nails done
  3. Get a massage
  4. Read a book for 25 minutes, with your favorite drink (cheers)
  5. Take a painting class or workshop (solo or with friends)
  6. Exercise
  7. Hang out with some fun, wise and encouraging women
  8. Find creative ways to eat better and healthier
Like I said, the world is your oyster. Think long and hard about the things that make you feel good as a woman and go for it.

In the heart of this post, is what I desire for all women to achieve, particularly moms. Earlier this month, I was so happy to join forces (no pun intended) with Melissa Dawn to create an experience featuring a few of the things I listed above. They may not have realized it, but the moms really needed it.

Become part of the experience next year and every year thereafter by signing up here. Don’t forget that you are responsible for your self-care for the rest of year. 😉

Smiling and loving on you always,

Normel

Happy Trails!
